My great-grandfather came to America from Cologne as a baby in the late 1800s.His birth certificate lists Cologne as his birth place. They then went to Wisconsin and settled around Lake Mendota. My grandfather passed away two years ago and he had all of the documentation.I need to get it from my grandmother.I did some research at the National Archives in the early nineties and found some additional information.I think my great-grandfather was one of eleven kids.I am told he use to tell stories about originally being from Prussia and later moving to Cologne.I am interested in doing more research, but I have had limited success so far.
My great-grandfather's brother, Joseph Kurth, played football under Knute Rockney at Notre Dame. His son, Ronald Kurth, was an Admiral in the Navy and is now retired.
I have not known how to even go about researching the family roots in Germany.I will provide further information when I get it.I would appreciate anything you have that may be helpful to me.Thank you.
P.S. - I have also heard of the spelling variation in our family back in Germany.
