This is what i have.I think John was his son that was raisedby Patrick Lafferty, my husbands ancestor. The rumor is that Thomas did not want to work the land and sold out to the British. Diane
Prudance Binks who married Patrick Lafferty was the daughter of Jacob Binks of Lounden County VA.
The Lafferty's in Virginia and Carolina. Lafferty's inNorth Carolina. Thomas Lafferty, bornabout 1740 in Ireland, fought for the British anddied after the Battle of Kings Mountain, from hanging, on Oct 14, 1780 Kings Mountain, North Carolina.
Lymon Drapers book" Kings Mt. and its Heroes" Chapter 13Page 265gives an account of how Lafferty called Thomas Robertson by name [ the battle was on] to get him to move from behind his tree. Lafferty shot at Thomas and tree bark flew next to his head.He returned fire and mortally wounded Lafferty. This was Oct.7,1780.I believe this Lafferty is the husband ofSarah 1741-1815and father of Alexander 1765-1827 and Samuel 1770-`838 and two daughters. Now I must prove and find his 1st. name. Not to be confused with Lt. Lafferty who was hunga week after the battle at Bickerstaffs Plantation along with 9 others out of a possible 30+ captives. thats on Page 340 same book.
Patrick Lafferty. probably born in Ireland.
Patrick the only proven brother to Thomas who died at Kings Mountain, North Carolina.A letter in the Lynman Draper --Kings Mountain papers on Microfilm state that the Lieutenant hung at Kings Mountain was brother to Patrick Lafferty who lived in the area. Patrick Lafferty is said to be the "Only proven Brother" of this Thomas. The earliest Land Grant thatI have seen for Patrick is from Royal Gov. Tryon in 1768, 150 Acres & 486 acres.Pre Revolution.and more after. What I would like to know is, has anyone come accross any Land Grant to Thomas who was a Kings man until hung for it.? It is presumed that the brothers came here on the promise of free land, but I have only seen Patrick who was quite active trading in land.
the Lafferty listed in "Claims for Georgia Militia Campaigns Against Indians on the Frontier, 1792-1827". John Lafferty is listed twice here. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 178486th Dist, SCPatrick Laffaty (Inventory of Ezekiel Lindsay) 1784/5Camden Dist, SCJno Lafferty (appraiser) 1787Greenville Co., SCPatrick Lafferty(490 ac.) 1790 " Andrew Lafferty(133 ac.) 1788-1790 " John Lafferty(200, 100, 100ac.) 1785 " Patrick Lafferty(grant 1785, sold 1787) 1791/96 " Andrew Lafferty (sold to Patrick in 1791 & 1796) 1788 " John Lafferty(Jackson Co., GA grant - sold 100 ac. 1791) 1791/96 " Patrick Lafferty(bought from Andrew in 1791 & 1796) 1755/1764Craven Co., SCPatrick Laforty / wife Prudence sold to Patrick McCormack Wateree River??? 1773Craven Co., SCPatrick Laferty(wit estate)ancestor
