Hey Bryan, I am also descended from Jean Lafitte, through a great-grandmother. Her name was Edmae Louise Richard (Lanfranc)(1890-1975), of Lake Charles. I can tell you that Edmae received checks from the estate of Jean Lafitte regularly. Nobody would speak of the connection to the man, due to the fact that we are descended from an illegitimate child of his, but it has always been known to everyone in the family. Due to the recent death of my grandmother, I have become more interested in this connection, and the payments that come with it. My mother and I recently discussed the checks my great-grandmother received, and my mother said that one she saw was in the $13.00 range. We do not know if the checks came monthly, quarterly or something else. Once Edmae died in 1975, my grandmother and her two siblings shared the wealth. My grandmother recently died at the age of 98, and since my father is already dead, half of her share will come to me. I am anxiously awaiting my roughly $1.50 a month, quarter, or something else. I wish I could offer more info, but this may at least help you determine that there was an estate and that settlements have been made to parts of the family. It is my understanding that Jean Lafitte had children spread all over the world. Some connections may have been proven, while others have not. Who knows?I hope this helps some!
