My great great grandparents were John Lahey and Alice Butler. They came from Kilkenny, Ireland, around 1847 with John's brother, Thomas Lahey, and Alice's brother John Butler. They left 2 sons buried in Kilkenny (Thomas and Patrick). The four surviving children were Michael (my great grandfather), a daugher Margaret (married Matthew O'Dea) a son John Jr. and a son James. They moved from Warren, Ohio to Bloomington, Illinois. From there all but Michael moved to Southwestern Kansas and started an Irish settlement called Waterford. It is about 5 miles north of Moscow, Kansas. This is about halfway between Ulysses and Hugoton, Kansas. There is an ancestoral cemetery there called the O'Dea Lahey cemetery. Most of these people are buried there.Alice Butler Lahey's brother John studied to be a priest in Ireland, but could not attend a seminary here, but he never married.Michael moved to Pittsburg, Kansas, and worked in the coal mines. He declared he could not bear farming.I have a wonderful booklet written in 1955 by John Jr.'s daugher who lived with her grandpa, (John Sr.) "Uncle Tommie" "Aunt Mag" (Margaret) "Uncle John Butler" "Uncle Johnnie" and Uncle "Jimmie."It tells the whole story of their migration and wonderful stories about all of these people. There were many hardships, and much poverty, and lots of tragedy. It will make you cry to read it. She was with the family when they left Illinois and went by train to Arkansas City, Kansas. They went by covered wagon the rest of the way to the free land on the Cimmaron River where they settled in a dugout.I hope someone who is related will respond to me.There are still many Lahey's in Moscow, Huguton, and Ulysses who are related to the original immigrant family.Let me know if you have any more information.Paula Madden [email protected]
