I have been researching JAMES RUNCIMAN for about two years now. I first find him in the 1790 Census of Georgetown, SC that is about half way between Charleston, SC and Wilmington, SC. What I think are his descendants migrate over to Charleston around 1820. Then to Barnwell, SC in the 40’s – 50’s. They finally end up in Wilmington about the time of the Civil War.
I could never figure out why James Runciman traveled to South Carolina from Scotland. Most of my family came from the British Isles, I have researched them all, and they all traveled in groups. That is until I saw this book title this weekend (see The Laing family Book title below). This would explain everything and tell me who James Runciman was and where he came from.
From here I plan on doing a lot of research in this Laing –Runciman connection. The book has John and Thomas Laing settling in New York. It looks like they never left. The book has James Runciman associated with this family in NY. I will need to connect the New York Laing’s with the SC Laing’s. Or maybe the book just spells this out (if anyone has it).
Can you tell me what you know about the family in NY and Laings in SC?
Regards, Dean Starr
