On March 11, 1940, an individual whose first name I cannot quite read (looks like Niff) and last name Laing gave my mother a Holy Bible. It appears to be a confirmation present. However, there is a very nice inscription to go with the signature. It seems that this person must have known my mother, rather than this being presented as one of many to a confirmation group. My mother's family, to the best of my knowledge, went to a Congregational Church. They were of Scottish descent and lived in Pittsburgh, PA. The Bible is embossed with my mother's maiden name, Susan Raynes Hosmer. My grandmother was Virginia Hosmer. My mother had a sisters Jane, Virginia, and Margaret, and a brother, James. My mother is seriously afflicted with Alzheimer's and cannot tell me a thing about her Bible. I am sure that the individual who gave my mother the Bible is deceased, but perhaps there is a family member who might know who this person was.
