Irby was educated in Gainestown & Mobile, AL, and attended the Mobile Military Institute for 3 years. He worked as bookkeepter at the First National Bank of Mobile.In 1911, Irby located to Montana and worked on a ranch at Darby for 2-1/2 years.Then became cashier at Victor State Bank for four years, then became bookkeeper and later manager of the Victor Commercial Company.
On 15 Feb 1914, Irby married Miss Hazel Waddel, daughter of John F. and Clara (Knowles) Waddel, who ranched near Darby MT.Lambard children: Massey S., b. 7 Nov 1914; Richard Irby, b. 26 Sep 1917; Ruth, b. ca 1922; Helen, b. ca 1925.
In the 1920 Federal Census, the mother, Elizabeth, and sisters, Elizabeth and Flora, were also living in Victor, MT.
The 1930 Federal Census shows Irby & Hazel, Massie, Richard, Ruth, Helen & Elizabeth (mother)living in Bagdad, Santa Rosa County, FL.All the children were born in Montana, except Helen who was born in Alabama.
