Dr. Wm Booker Lamkin (1841-1880) enlisted in the Confederate Army February 28, 1862 at the age of 22.AT the time of enlistment he was a medical student. He served for the duration of the war as a hospital steward in Co. K, 48th Reg. Georgia Volunteers, Appling, Columbia County, GA under Capt. James Thomas Hamilton.Co. K was known as Hamilton's Rangers.Their campaigns are coronicalled at www.anglefire.com.Dr. Lamkin's confererate service records can be found in the National Archieves, I have copies. Dr. Wm Lamkin married Martha Emily Freeman (1849-1913) in 1872.They had three children, Augustus Fleming Lamkin (1874-1950), Beryl Lulu Lamkin (1876-1932) and William Booker Lamkin Jr. (1880-?). Family folklore says that William Booker Lamkin Jr is my grandfather, but grandfather left home in his early twentys to seek his fortune in Oregon, and in the process change his hame to Elmer Coleman Cushman. My father and aunt tell of seeing insurance policies with William Booker Lamkin on the title. There are several Cushman families in Appling, GA but I have not made contact. Can you shead any light on this mistery? I do have a copy of Songs of Sunset, poetry by Augustus F Lamkin.
