ARCADIA, LA - Funeral services will be held for Elton Allen Lamkin, 83, at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, December 11, 2009, at Alabama Baptist Church in Arcadia. The interment will follow at the Alabama cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 5:00-7:00 p.m.
Mr. Lamkin was born October 21, 1926, in Arcadia, LA, to John and Nellie Lamkin. He entered into rest on December 8, 2009, in Ruston, LA. Mr. Lamkin was a graduate of Arcadia High School and Louisiana Tech University. He received his masters degree from Northwestern State College. He served during WWII in the army of occupation as assistant chaplain. Mr. Lamkin also served 30 years in the Louisiana public school system and held many positions during that time. He was the Supervisor of Music for the Louisiana Department of Education. He was the founder of Future Music Leaders of America, which sponsored Louisiana Tech summer band camps. After leaving the state department Mr. Lamkin was appointed Superintendent for the Louisiana State School for the Deaf. Mr. Lamkin was a long time member, deacon, and minister of music at Alabama Baptist Church. He finished his career as the executive director of the Bienville Parish Council on Aging. Papa loved his Lord, his family, his friends and his music. He was always so happy to help his fellow man. He will be dearly missed by all that knew him.
Mr. Lamkin is preceded in death by his brothers, Colby, Sherwood, Joe, Bill and J.M. Lamkin, and by sister Connie Lamkin Jones.
He is survived by his wife Billie Rogers Lamkin of Ruston, LA, son Harrel Lamkin and wife Janie of Ruston, LA, daughter Janet L. Hammock and husband Jay of Ruston, LA, and by grandchildren Katie Sandifer and husband Doyle of Ruston, LA, Kevin Sherrard of Ruston, LA, and Anna Beth Lamkin of Ruston, LA.
Pallbearers will be Stan Beard, Steve Beard, Calvin Simpson, Lorenz Perritt, J.T. Piles and Jim Smith.
