Family Tree DNA has just announced a one-week promotion from now through 21 July.
FT DNA’s newest test, I think, is the Y-DNA 111, to which I just upgraded from the Y-67.So far, I’m the only one of the Surry County, VA, Lancaster line to do that, so I have no matches at the 111-marker level. In time, I suppose others will get this test.
FTDNA has been promoting another new test, the Family Finder, for a few months. They point out that it’s a breakthrough in that, unlike the Y-DNA (for males only) or the mtDNA (which can be taken by males or females, but reveals information only about the female line), the Family Finder works equally well for males or females. It examines autosomal DNA and calculates the degree of relatedness between two participants regardless of gender, haplogroup, paternal ancestry, or maternal ancestry. For example, according to my understanding, if your mother’s uncle, your father’s uncle, and you each had the Family Finder test, it should indicate how closely related each of you is to the other. The test will estimate the probability that your relationship to another participant is, for example, first cousin, third cousin, fourth cousin, etc. For each match found, it tells you a range of possible relationships between you and the matching person and indicates the most likely relationship between the two of you. I have just received my results for the Family Finder test and am exploring some interesting possible relationships with others—non Lancasters—in the FT DNA database. So far, I don’t know of anybody who is known to be kin to me who has had this test, but I hope it will happen. The test is said to have a high degree of accuracy for five or six generations back, or out to fifth cousins. It sometimes discovers relationships much further back, but FT DNA doesn’t promise that.
