See "Finding Our Fathers" by Dan Rottenberg, Random House, NY, 1977: "Landau (also Landauer) - Ashkenazik name taken from the city of Landau in western Germany. [means meadowland]It is found largely among Polish Jews, who probably were expelled from that city in mid-16th cent. The name itself was used as a Jewish family name as early as 1480.From the end of 16th cent. onward, the descendants of the original Landau family were in Poland, especially the western part of Podolia (annexed by Austria in 1772).See book for further info.
