Let me try to summarize what facts I have that relate to Christian Landau:
1. My sources show that his name as recorded in the church records in Germany was Johann Friedrich Christian Landau, born 08 August, 1830 in Waldeck. He is the youngest child of ten, born to Johannes Landau, master baker and farmer (1784-1867) and Johannette Marie Pfennig. I have more about the parents and their ancestry, all from the Ortssippenbüch (Local Lineage Book)for Goddelsheim, Vol. 28, Compiler: Eckhard Schmidt, 1986 and relayed to me courtesy of Gerald Gerhild.
2. I have evidence that my g-g-grandfather, Johannes Carl Friedrich Landau, was in Brooklyn before 8 Dec 1848, because his daughter Jeannette was born there. (Funeral home records, census records). I also know that he came to Petersburg between 1856 and 1859, because of the listed birthplaces of his children. He bought the 5 acre plot of land he lived on a mile east of Petersburg on July 1, 1858.
3. Evidence in the 1860 Census of Menard County suggests that 4 Landau siblings came from Waldeck to Brooklyn to Petersburg. I don't know if they came together or separately. In the 1860 Census, we find listed:
William Landon Line 19, Page 236, HN 1710, FN 1612 Age 37 -- Carl Henrich Wilhelm Landau, b. 22 Dec 1822.
Philapena Landon Line 20, Page 236, HN 1710, FN 1612 Age 42 -- Henrietta Louise Wilhelmina Philapena Landau, b. 25 Feb 1819. These two individuals are living with Dr. J. C. Davieson, physician, and have occupations of farm laborer and domestic respectively.
Next door at HN 1711, FN 1613, we find:
Christian Landon age 29 -- your g-g-grandfather, listed with wife Annie, age 27, and son Henry, age 1. His occupation is farmer and property value is $500. Why "Landon" and not "Landau" is a mystery.
4. The only other mention of Christian Landau that I have in my present set of facts is that he was a witness to the will of my g-g-grandmother Doretta, signed Jan 16, 1895, the day before she died.
