Actually, Josephine was her Americanized name (Jacobena). The census taker has her listed as Josephine on at least one census that I know of. And she is sometimes referred to as Josephine in other places... like the history I posted earlier.
Common occurence back then... Lewis (born Ludwig, 1821) spells his OWN name in his will as both Lewis, AND Louis. Apparantly, even on his death bed he couldn't decide which way he wanted to spell his own name .
