Hi Susan
Not sure I can tell you about the origin of the surname Lantern but I do know that in VA before 1800, the surname had been found as LANTON, LANTHURN, LANTRON, and maybe others. I have and still consider the possibility that it was derived from the surname Landrum, that is, in America. However I have seen the Lanton surname in other countries.
What is Your Lantern line in N. Ga? We are said to have a link to MS somehow but haven't figured it out or who it was. Uncle said something about MS but told no more.
My gr grandfather, claimed to know many people in the states surrounding TN, where he was in 1860's, we never heard of any siblings and no one seemed to know his family or that he had any, that is, the generations since my grandmother, everyone then and before seemed to keep this line a secret. I'm sure there is indian in this line. that's the only secret I can think of. Back then the discrimination was quite debilitating to a family of color.

WITH THAT i MUST ADD, you must be open minded when tracing these lines. My gr grandfather was listed in 1870 as a white man, the family I find then in TN, with it's many coincidences and similarities to my line and what i am searching, with the info I have found and have been given, seems to be mine. I have seen pictures of this early LANTERN line and they appear to be a little darker than the average irishman or englishman I guess you could say. African? No not necessarily but possible too of course. I find that in the earlier era, 1700's, the individuals who didnt' quite appear to be full blooded white, were called black, that meant, indian, portuguese, mexican, spanish, etc as well as black and ANY mixed races of white and those of color.
I have a website of my line at
www.angelfire.com/il2/lanthrum
if you'll notice, my surname is LANTHRUM, prior to my grandmother I find it was LANTRUM, and further back Lantron and lanton and lantern.
Guess you can't tell I'm glad to hear from a LANTERN family. haha.
Please let me know your line.
