THat is VERY interesting. Seems like there was a Henry in Mobile AL. Let me check.
Also, gathings, I remember that name. Will have to look. Any way, I think that is really really weird abuot your grandmother snapping like that, sounds like my uncle. Never did tell the secret. If you read on melungeon history, they ALL had secrets in their lines. They were running from the discriminations back then, not so bad at first, early 1700's I think and certainly before, but later it came in hard, racism I mean, with slavery, so most of our older folks wouldn't talk about color, jsut clammed up I think. It would take 5 pages to tell you about my Joseph's line and the incidents and things that I've learned and kind of figured out, well, feel like I have if I'm on the right track .
Joseph's son Joseph was in Oakdale LA, not sure the county, upper part though, where's bugaloosa or whatever? Joseph went there not wanting folks to think he was French so I was told and my aunts all are saying this line was Irish, but I dont' think so, that is, unless it was way before the mulatto's, maybe they came here to America as Irish Indentured servants then mixed with whatever other race, Anywya,so I've been reading and think maybe he didnt' want to be classified as creole since outsiders were rather categorized in LA, as mixed if not born there and raised as French, full blooded. I think that is right, how I udnerstand it anyway.
Well, funny, you have Henry and Thomas like this line and my grandfather's dau was Louise. Still haven't found out where Cecile comes from. I have a website at
if you 'd like to look at it and see photos, let me know if any resemblence but I have one of the Joseph Lantern grandson, RUfus and John if you'd like me to send that photo. That was Thomas's line, my Henry's brother. They married into the darker races and also went to IL, my Joseph ended up just about everywhere they did, but he was white after he grew up, passed I suppose, his cousins didn;t but they continued marrying in the mixed lines , most, but I've been told a few of them went north passed as white and didnt' look back. Sad to lose fmaily that way but I guess back then it was necessary as they were SO discriminated against, coudlnt' always own land, coudlnt' get marriage license etc.
