Greetings to all the members of the Lathrop Family!
My name is Randal J. Loy, and I am researching the histories of the stained glass windows in the Nave of the church I attend, Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral (Episcopal), Kansas City, Missouri. This is a volunteer project for which I receive no remuneration, and the project has no budget or funds to pay for professional researchers or "search fees" of state and local vital records departments. Also, I am currently unemployed, and do not have the resources to travel to Connecticut to research this material myself. So I need assistance, if someone can provide it.
One of the windows is dedicated to John Hiram Lathrop (1799-1866) and his wife, Frances Eliza Lathrop. John Hiram Lathrop was the first president of the University of Missouri in 1840. He was also chancellor of the University of Wisconsin in 1849 and president of the University of Indiana in 1859. They returned to Columbia, Missouri in 1860, where he was acting president of the University of Missouri, until he was elected president in 1865. He died on August 2, 1866, in Columbia, Missouri. He is buried in Columbia Cemetery there.
I just wondered if any of you had done extensive research on that particular family. The problem I'm having is with the family of his wife, Frances Eliza, born 30 JAN 1809, in Utica, NY, died 18 OCT 1893, in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri. (Her death date is often listed as 20 OCT 1893, but that was the date of her funeral -- I have the notices from our local newspaper, so that has been verified.)
There are several listings for her on Rootsweb.com that give her maiden name as "Lothrop" or "Lathrop". I thought that was all the confusion of amateur researchers, but last evening, while searching on the Internet, I came across a biography of John Hiram Lathrop published in 1913 which also lists Frances' maiden name as "Lothrop". When I checked on FamilySearch.org, I found that "Frances Eliza Lothrop" is listed there with the correct birth, marriage and death dates, and the correct spouse.
John Hiram and Frances Lathrop were married on August 15, 1833, in New Haven, Connecticut. Unfortunately, I cannot find any assistance there for someone to check the marriage certificate and confirm that Frances' maiden name was "Lothrop".
If that could be done, then I could begin to try to find her parents. I believe, based on the names given to her own children, that Frances' parents were John Hosmer Lothrop (b. 1769?) and Jerusha Kirkland (b. 1773?), but all that is tentative, because it comes from Rootsweb.com and John Hosmer is listed there as often with the surname "Lathrop" as he is with the surname "Lothrop", and, Jerusha also.
Has anyone sorted out this Lathrop/Lothrop family? It seems a great coincidence that Frances would marry a man with the same last name -- but perhaps they were cousins. I'm looking for the birth and death dates for John Hosmer Lothrop/Lathrop and Jerusha Kirkland, also.
If you can assist me, I would greatly appreciate it.(I have posted a similar request at the "Lothrop" family forum site.)
Just for the record -- I've completed research on about 100 families for this project, and this last one is far more complicated than any of the others I've done.If you have information for me, please feel free to contact me directly at RandalJLoy@gmail.com.
