Thank you very, very much for the newspaper link. It's full of wonderful information.
That said, my ancestor Venance Latour dit Forget moved to Coopersville, Clinton, New York between 1845 and 1848 as far as I can tell.At some point he went by Sylvanus Forsher/Fosher/Forget.Finding information on him has been difficult.Venance/Venant Latour was 16 May 1819 in L'Assomption, Quebec, Canada and died 16 December 1902 in Coopersville.I cannot confirm his death date because I have found no matching record of the event. It is carved into his gravestone with his wife Francis Papin, with son Ephraim Forsher and daughter-in-law Arthemisy Forsher (lavalley) etched on the side.
I haven't found a direct link to my Latours with the ones in the thread but I offer the information as a way to remove them from the equation.
Shortly after Venance Latour and Francoise (illigitime) moved to Coopersville I saw records for "Jonas Latour" and "Basile Latour"/Forget.Jonas Latour's name showed up on Venance Latour's son's baptism in 1853.The son is also named Jonas.I saw a family tree on Ancestry.com that said his father was Basile Latour dit Forget.
Venance had a brother named Basile. The Basile in Clinton County married Clemence Dupre in 1870 but I cannot confirm he is the same Basile. His parents are listed as "Louis Forget" and "Marie Hupe" but he is the widow of Marianne Aubin. As far as I know Basile and Venant's father was Jean Baptiste Latour who married Marie Josephte Lacroix/Huppe.
I do not know what became of Basile but Jonas seems to have later gone by the name Jonas Forgays.I have not found any of their children going by "Latour" since around 1863.
