In the mid-50s, a man settled in Sevierville, Tennessee, and began to speculate in mountain real estate. His name was F. Elwin Latta, and he styled himself a financial investigator and counselor from New York and Chicago. He was among the first to see the tourism potential of the mountain lands around the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. He put together a consortium of prominent East Tennesseans and assembled multi-thousand-acre tracts that later became significant resorts and retirement communities. He apparently was from Iowa, and he was married to Angie Noel of Virginia. In 1953 he was 77 years old. He is buried beside a small church cemetery near Cobbly Nob resort on Highway 321 between Gatlinburg and Cosby, TN.
Does anyone know of any family connections to Elwin Latta?
I was a child when he was in Sevierville, and my father, as trustee of Sevier County, was his friend and guide to the area, especially around English Mountain, where some of his real estate holdings were located.
