My mother was a Palmiter which is a Hugenot name spelled in a variety of ways - such as "Palmetter" or "Palmetier." There are a number of MEN in our tree with the first name "Laverne" including my brother - Bryce Laverne Stone.
I am trying to find the root of that practice. Since a son in colonial timesfrequently received the mother's maiden name as a given or Christian name, was there ever a "Lavergne" woman who married a Palmiter and bore a "Laverne" boy?
Common states for us are RI, CT, NY (Alfred), PA (Wellsboro), and Calhoun Co., MI
