I am a descendant of Ambrose Lea and Frances Wheeler.
The issue concerning the Lee/Lea Families of Caswell/Person/Orange Counties in NC is puzzling and for those of us who descend from the Ambrose Lea of Chester, South Carolina, there is no proof yet as from which Lea we descend.
The Ambrose Lea who lived in Virginia is NOT the same Ambrose Lea who moved to Chester. His date of death is different from Ambrose Lea's DOD which is 1803.
In 1789 Ambrose moved to Chester, SC along with Owen, Edmund, and Elliott Lea, three sons of John Lea and Ann Carter Lea.However, Ambrose doesn't seem to be one of John and Ann's sons, as he's not mentioned in John's will.Ambrose purchased 100 acres in Chester County on Sandy River. He appeared in the 1800 census of South Carolina and died intestate before November 3, 1803 when Frances, petitioned the court of Chester District "to grant her letters of administration of the estate of Ambrose Lee (sic) late of said district deceased." Frances, along with Elliott Lee and John Terry, gave bond Nov 15, 1803 to make an inventory of the estate, which inventory they made and filed. Frances Lee administered the estate until January 1825 when the property was divided among seven children of Ambrose and Frances, namely, William, John, Jeremiah, David A., Sarah, Nancy and Vincent (Vinson) who are named in the records.
Robert, I would be interested in hearing more about John Gabriel Lea as the step-father/guardian of Ambrose Lea, etc. There was also a Gabriel Lea, son of James Lea of Kilgore's Branch. Are they one in the same?
