Frank, thanks for answering.Richard Leake died in Orange County, NC not VA, or at least that's where his will was proved.I believe he may have been living in Montgomery Co, NC until shortly prior to his death, and before that Lunenburg Co. VA.
What I'm trying to determine is the identity and location of his daughter Mary and her Moore husband. He named a daughter Mary Moore in his will and a grandson Richard Leake Moore.I have been looking at Moores extensively in all of these areas for quite a while, but am not able to determineMary's Moore husband was or where they might have been. There are about five different people named John Moore in Orange Co,NC before 1800, and some of them have a wife named Mary, some with wives unknown. And there are quite a few other Moores there as well. The same is true in Montgomery and Lunenburg. There was a James Moore found with or next to Richard Leake in one of the Lunenburg tax lists from around 1760.There was also a James Moore in Montgomery Co, NC and Orange Co, NC.
I don't know why Richard was in Orange Co. when he died as he does not appear to have owned land there or even been there very long.Names of some of the witnesses suggest he may have been in the area of Hawfields at his death, not far from the area where my "mystery ancestor" Sterling Moore was found from 1792 (or earlier) to 1799.In the tax district which covered the southern Hawfields area, called first Tryon, then Caswell District (note: NOT the same as Caswell Co), and an area where Sterling Moore appears on a tax list in 1792, there is also one single instance of the name Richard Moore appearing in a tax list for the same district. There is a James Moore there also, but there are several James Moores in Orange, as well as many John's.
I have not researched Richard Leake extensively, but my "guestimate" is that his children, including Mary, were marrying in the 1750's and 1760's, probably in or around Lunenburg Co, and this is the time that a James Moore shows up there with Leake.Richard apparently then moved to Anson/Montgomery Co, NC, but was in Orange Co. when he died. This time range would have made it possible for Mary Leake Moore to have been the mother of my Sterling Moore, who was born about 1765-67, place and parents unknown.
Do you have any information at all on the family or whereabouts of Mary Leake Moore?Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Do you know where William Leake, Richard's father, was living?
