At the cemetary website you will find the first Leatherman to settle in Western North Carolina, along with a number of children, grandchildren & great-grandchildren. The cemetary is located in Cowee Community, Leatherman Road, Franklin, NC.Close by is the old general store (Rickman's Store) which once housed the Leatherman, NC post office.The building is located at the intersection of Leatherman Rd. & Shepard Creek Rd. and still standing with the old mail boxes visible through the window.The store's proprieter was Oscar Rickman, and closed in the mid-1950's.It is still owned by one of his daugthers.You will note one burial in the Shepard Cemetary is Rev. Samuel Gibson, he was the grandfather or Martha Palistine Gibson Leatherman, wife of Zachariah Leatherman.Rev. Gibson was a fifer (musician)during the Revolutionary War and one of the first Methodist Ministers in Western NC, a circuit rider minister.
