I am sure there is a connection to my family. My father, James Powell Leatherwood's father, my grandfather, was William Forrest Leatherwood married to Annie Agnes Powell. My grandfather told me the Powell name was takenabout mid 1800's as an americanized name of my gggrandfather von papen, poppin, popen???He left Germany during an overthrow of the German Government(civil war), of which the von poppin (?) family was aristocracy, and came here to the Iuka, Ms area during the mid 1800's to wind up in the American Civil war, saying there was much antisentiment against the Germans, reason unknown by me, and he took the Powell name. Not sure of all this, just told to me by my grandfather WF Leatherwood. By the way , his father was James Washington Leatherwood a Civil war vet, now buried in Itasca Texas.Mike LeatherwoodHillsboro, Tx
