Terri ... Thanks so much for your reply! I am most interested in the descendants of Elisha W. and Acenath N. Leatherwood since they would be cousins of mine. I would be fourth cousins to this family's grandchildren (if that makes sense).
I am a great-great granddaughter of another Banyan Payne (1800-1878), the brother of Wylie Payne and Sarah Owen (grandparents of Acenath). I have researched this family quite a bit ... LOTS of Hays & Williamson County, TX Payne relatives out there!!! If you are interested in any of Acenath's Payne family, please let me know and I can assist you (I think)!
Children of Elish W. and Acenath N. Payne Woodward that I have so far:
Willie Woodward Leatherwood (Nov 20, 1882 - ?)
Eliza Leatherwood (Aug. 1884 - ? ... who did she marry?)
Roy Alfred Leatherwood (June 7, 1886 - ? )
Nathaniel Banyan Leatherwood (May 25, 1888 - ? )
Thomas Melmuth Leatherwood (Nov 6, 1893 - Dec. 1969)
Paul Castleberry Leatherwood (May 1896 - ? )
On Paul ... He was listed in the 1900 census as being named PAYNE. Do you know anything about this? Did the family simply change his name or was there an error of some kind?
I think I was seeing that you are a descendant of Paul C. Leatherwood, is that correct?
I am interested in any "family stories", as well as just the actual descendants. Am also interested in any old pictures of family, especially if you have an image of Acenath N. Payne Leatherwood that you know of. Would be interested in other pictures and/or memorabilia (copies, of course) ... Basically whatever you would be willing to share. I am pretty avidly into this genealogy thing and am hoping to compile a FTM book on this PAYNE family soon (with additional character sketches and pictures included -- for family members that are interested). I have pictures of the "original" Banyan Payne (1800-1878) and his wife, another Nancy M. Wright (d. 1883, Tipton County, TN) [Banyan's mother was also reportedly Nancy Wright -- but have not found conclusive evidence other than family rumor for this].
Banyan and Wylie Payne had a sister, Elizabeth (b. 1797) who married Dr. John T. Millar. They immigrated to Texas in 1831 -- to the Stephen F. Austin Colony. Their daughter, Nancy Millar married Abraham Alley, one of the original "Old 100" Austin colonists. (Not sure if it was 100 or 300 right now). Descendants live all over Texas today, but several are at Columbus, and the original "Alley Log Cabin" has been restored there as a little museum.
Acenath Narcissa Payne's great grandfather was DANIEL PAYNE (1770-1807), as you have noted. I can go back one generation further ... to JOHN PAYNE (abt 1731-1780), a blacksmith, from Kershaw County, SC (near present day Camden). There was a Bible record discovered which lists all the children of this original John Payne which the Camden Archives very graciously sent me a couple of years back.
Sorry to wax so eloquent on all this family stuff, but it is very fascinating to me. Hope you will send -- or post more info about each of these Leatherwood family members and their spouses/descendants so that my records can "catch up" on this family.
Please send information ... I have FTM 16 ... or ged files ... and can take attachments well, as I have a DSL connection. I am at [email protected]
Looking forward to your correspondence! ....
