Based on census records I estimate my Joel Ledbetter was born about 1777.Census records indicate he was born in NC. His wife was Lydia Keaton. He first appears in the 1800 Montgomery Co. NC census. He is there in 1810, (no 1820 census),1830 and 1840 census records. Stanly Co. was formed in 1841 from Montgomery Co. NC.Joel died in 1843.I have his will.He and his wife are listed, in 1828, on the roll of Rocky River Baptist Church, located in northern Anson Co. just across the river from present Stanly Co. Children: 1. Nelly Ledbetter 2. son Ledbetter 3. Lucy Ledbetter b. c1800 m. Thomas Turner. 4. John Ledbetter b. c1803 m. Winney Orreana___? 5. Alfred Ledbetter b. 1805 m. Temperance Tucker (Brooks).I descend from this couple. 6. daughter Ledbetter 7. Sarah Sally Ledbetter b. c1809 m. Akel Burgess.
I have nearly everything possible on the Rev. Henry Ledbetter family of Caswell Co. NC which includes his son Joel Ledbetter Sr., who is reported to have a son Joel Ledbetter, Jr. who ended up in Alabama. Most of the descendants of this Rev. Henry and Edy Ledbetter migrated to the GA/SC border line area. This family has been a suspect line, as well as the other Ledbetters from Brunswick co. VA who settled in the eastern part of Stanly (Montgomery) Co., such as Charles, Drury, etc.
Given names in my Ledbetter line match most of the other Ledbetters - Henry, William, Alfred, Joel, Lydia, Tempy, Calvin, Cornelius, Nancy, Archibald, Malinda, Gilliam, Lugenia, etc.
I have not found any thing on Joel's wife - Lydia Keaton. Most of those appear in eastern NC.
One researcher suggests that Zachariah Ledbetter might be his father, however, when I examine dates, I find it only slightly possible.
I have lots of Ledbetter info.Been working on them for years.Any help is appreciated and I am willing to share what I have.I have the book "Ledbetters From Virginia." My Joel only appears in the very back with the census records. Somehow the authors missed this whole line who lived practically under their noses.
