1790 SC Federal Census: "Needum" Lee is found in the 1790 SC census located in Georgetown District, Pr. Frederick Parish with 1 male over 16, 4 males under 16, 3 females and6 slaves. 1800 SC Federal Census: “Nedham” Lee, marked age 26/45 in the 1800 census, of Williamsburg District [born 1755/1774]; household: 2 m.10/ 151785-1790; 1f. under 10; 1 f. 26/44; 12 slaves. This Needham Lee had slaves. The "brothers" named in "Happy Heritage" were not slave owners which makes me believe that this Needham Lee was not one of the brothers. If the 1800 census is marked with the correct age, Needham is not old enough to be a brother. Needham's family is proved in Williamsburg, SC Deed Books. His death which was before 28 July 1820 is also proved. Sep 1820 - W'burg Deed Book C p. 69 JOHN LEE of Franklin Co. of Miss. Territory... attorney "for my brothers JAMES & NEEDHAM LEE of the same country & state & MOSES HATCHEL JUN. of -- County, Georgia, have sold, released, etc. unto SUSANNAH LEE of Williamsburg, a negro girl Mary." 6 Sep 1820R: 19 Sep 1820. Smith, attorney & agent for the 4 heirs of Needham Lee, deceased – John Lee, Needham Lee, James Lee, &Moses Hatcher; money paid… [all 3 of these R: 1 Jan 1827] There was another Needham Lee listed in the 1800 SC census: “Nedham” Lee of Liberty Co. (this would have been above Williamsburg in 1800; the Lynches River would have ended in this county) marked as over 45. He had 2 males age 16/26 and a female 26/45. He had no slaves. He is not found again in SC records. It is more logical that he would be the older brother of David Lee. Who were his two sons? I believe that one was a Sherod/Sherwood Lee b. c1784, married Zilphia Lee, d/o Simon Lee.
