CAROLINE THOMPSON was born Jan. 19, l835, in Fayette Co., Ind.In infancy she moved with her parents to Rush County, Ind.When she was nine years of age they came to Des Moines County, Iowa.At the age of l5 years she united with the Methodist Episcopal Church of which she has continued a faithful member until her death.On the 5th day of August, l856, she was married to W.T. HAND in Fairfield, who died May 29, l88l.She came to Van Wert in August, l88l, where she lived until 8 years ago when on accountof failing health gave up keeping house and has since made her home with her children.She died on May 23, l904, at the home of her daughter, MRS. LAURA LEFFLER, aged 69 years, 4 months, 4 days.She leaves 8 children and l step-son, NOAH HAND.Her children are as follows: HARRIET E., ELIZA J., ALICE M., LAURA A., MARY M., WESLEY H., LIZZIE S., and MINNIE G. She leaves 36 grandchildren and a great grandson, two brothers, two sisters and a number of other relatives to mourn her departure.
Sister HAND's lot has been one of toil and care, the cup of sorrow has also been her proportion, yet in life's battle she has borne a noble part.She lived to be of use to others.She made very many friends.Someone said "Everybody was her friend."She loved the House of God and her place was not vacant among the worshippers.It can truly be said that "it is well with her," she has gone home, she has come to her grave in a full age like, as a shock of corn harvested in its season.Her memory is precious and her labors on earth are not forgotten, they will bear fruit until life eternal.
The funeral services were held in the M.E. Church where some of her most favorite hymns were sung.Her Pastor preached from 2d Cor. 4:l7, l8 and 5:l, which she had selected, after which her remains were borne to the Van Wert Cemetery where they were laid to rest.
