Ann MNU, m. Isaac, son of Isaac and Ann, Monongalia, WV 1700s
Based on research published in a book entitled "Lemasters, U.S.A. 1965" and in research published by Ralph D. Smith, there is strong evidecence that Isaac and Catherine (Ward) Lemasters of Charles County, Maryland had a son named Isaac, likely born before 1734, who married a woman named Ann (and nicknamed "Nancy") before 1756. This Ann/Nancy MIGHT have been born a Flint under a THEORY proposed by some. This Isaac and Ann had sons Isaac, Thomas, Joseph and Benjamin and daughters Mary, Charity and Catherine.
Isaac, the son of Isaac and Ann (Flint????) Lemasters was probably born before 1758 (based on his militia service in 1774, during Lord Dunmore's War). This Isaac born in the 1750s in turn ALSO married a woman named Ann. Thus, there were TWO successive generations where a couple was named Isaac and Ann.
I am working on a THEORY that the younger Ann of these two generation might have been born Ann Scott, daughter of David and Judith (Cunningham) Scott of Monongalia County, Virginia (now West Virginia).
For many years, a theory has circulated about Isaac Lemasters marrying an Ann Scott, but people thought it was the Isaac born before 1734. Perhaps people jumbled the father and son Isaac, who both married women named Ann???
David Scott was born about 1737 (according to his age as stated in an application for a military penison in connection with his wounded arm), probably in Virginia and was reportedly the son of an Alexander Scott who lived on Lunes Creek (a/k/a Luneys Creek, Looneys Creek and Lunice Creek), in the area of modern-day Grant County, West Virginia (South Branch of the Potomac River). David Scott married a Judith Cunningham and, by about 1770, had moved to the Monongahela River valley, near modern-day Morgantown, WV (Monongalia County).
David Scott had numerous children, and many researchers include a daughter named Ann (and nicknamed "Nancy"). Many researchers ESTIMATE her birth at 1772, but no one seems to have any firm evidence for that date. Given David's birth about 1737, and marriage possibly as early as 1757, he and Judith could have had children from about 1758 to about 1786 (when Felix, probably their last child, was born).
On World Connect (www.rootsweb.com), three people have posted trees claiming that this Ann or Nancy Scott married a George Metcalf. None of them has cited a reliable source for this claim and I have been unable to find any information/evidence that would support this claim.
I am working on a THEORY that David Scott's daugther Ann might have been born before 1764, and MIGHT have married Isaac Lemaster (a/k/a Lemasters), the son of Isaac and Ann (maiden name unknown, POSSIBLY Flint??) Lemasters of Monongalia County. This Isaac (the younger) and Ann (possibly Scott?) Lemasters named a son David. As far as I have been able to discover, this is the first time that the name "David" was given to any son descending from Abraham Lemasters of Charles County, Maryland. While the name "David" might have simply been popular, it might also have been significant as the possible name of this boy's maternal grandfather.
Isaac and Ann moved from the Monongahela to the Cumberland River (near modern-day Nashville, Tennessee), in the area of Davidson County, not all that far from Isaac's brother Joseph (a Revolutionary War Vet of Maury County, Tennessee). Isaac and Ann later moved even further, to the West side of the Mississippi (Louisiana Territory, purchased from France in 1804), in modern-day St. Charles County, Missouri.
Does anyone have any reasonably credible evidence on the date of birth of Ann/Nancy Scott, and of her husband, children and residences? Alternatively, does any one have information or ideas about the Ann who married this Isaac (born in the 1750s)? Please contact me directly at [email protected].
