Wow. you must have been super excited. I know I would be.
Hello. I sure hope you're still interested in connecting with possible matches to your family tree! and surely hope you're still following this forum.
Here's my story. My dad's name was Ernesto Leon Colon, born in Ponce, 1929. He had several siblings (his dad married 3 times): Lucila (Lucy), Buenaventura (Buena), Enna, Ana, Virginia, Andres, Roberto, Osvaldo (Owen), Gilberto (Jon) - they totaled about 14. His parents were Baldomero Leon (Leon) (b. abt 1886 d. 1941 -Ponce) and Teresa Colon Beltran (b. 1903 d. 1948 -NYC) (her aunt, Secundina Beltran Collazo was married to THE GREAT Juan Morel Campos), and she later went by Teresa Leon Colon. Luckily for us, Baldomero kept a little notebook where he noted the birth of each his kids, but never noted anything on his parents.
Teresa's parents are Fructuoso "Fruto" Colon (mother Elena Colon) and her mother is Felipa Beltran Collazo. All in Ponce.
Baldomero's parents "supposedly" (will explain) were Manuel Leon and Petronila Leon. And this is where the "supposedly" comes in.
The story that I've learned recently is that LEON may not be our family name after all, and I have no real way of confirming the following: both Manuel and Petronila "ran away" from Spain. As I was told, Manuel was a Dominican peasant living in Spain, he falls in love with Petronila who belongs to a "familia royal" (they prob do mean royal family, or perhaps an aristocratic family). Her parents are not happy with their relationship, and long story short, they run away and out of Spain to Puerto Rico. True or not, there's no way to now for sure if they first came to Adjuntas where Baldomero was supposedly born (I haven't been able to find any birth record) or if it was Ponce, where he later ends up. On his marriage records he states his mom is from Ponce/Adjuntas.
As for the last name, it is believed that Manuel and Petronila changed their names once they left Spain. So we don't know if those are even their real first or last names, if Leon is his name or hers and they both decided to carry the name. Note that I've searched the volumes in Family Search and have yet to find any death records on either of them, or anyone that might be them with those names. I'm thinking if they lived with those names they would've died with those names as well, right?
Hope some of this rings a bell, and hope to hear from you too!
