J. O. Light, 81, of Colonial Heights, Sullivan Co TN, passed away peacefully at 1:45 a.m., Thursday, September 10, 2009, at his residence following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Hawkins Co TN, on October 7, 1927, a son of the late Samuel and Cready Mullins Light, he has resided in this area his entire life.
Mr. Light owned and operated the Colonial Heights Exxon for approximately 35 years.
He was a member and past master of Sinking Creek Masonic Lodge # 575, F. & A. M.
Mr. Light was a member and former deacon of Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church.
He was a veteran of World War II having served in the US Army.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one sister, Sylvia Duncan.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Evelyn Kiser Light of the home; one son, Andy Light and wife Donna of Gray, TN; one grandson, Kris Wilson and wife, Holly of the US Navy; one great-granddaughter, Emma Wilson; one nephew, John Samuel Duncan and wife Judy; several additional nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Wellmont Hospice.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, September 13, 2009, at Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church.
Services will follow at 3 p.m., Sunday, at the church with the Rev. Tom Phillips officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be his Hardee’s buddies.
Burial will follow in East Lawn Memorial Park. A flag presentation will be conducted by the American Legion Hammond Post #3 and Gate City Post # 265.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions may be made to Wellmont Hospice House 280 Steeles Road, Bristol, TN 37620; or Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church, 213 Colonial Heights Road, Kingsport, TN 37663.
