Samuel Light was born in Tennessee about 1813.He was ennumerated in Pulaski, Missouri in the 1850 census, with children Rebecca, born 1832, Patience, born 1840, Humphrey, born 1840, Amanda, born 1842, John, born 1847 and Jacob, born 1849.The mother of the children is not known. Also living with Samuel at that census, was Simon Dalton, born in Tennessee.Simon Dalton is known to be a son of Thomas Dalton and Dolly Light Dalton of Hawkins County, Tennessee
Samuel died in 1860 in Phelps, Missouri.Greenberry Hance, his son-in-law, was the executor of his will. His widow is named as Tempe (Temperance) Mahala Light. As his probate papers state, he died "leaving a widow and eight children 5 of whom are minors"The listed heirs are: Jacob Light, minor, John Light, minor, Riley Light, minor, Jonathan Light, minor, Sarah C. Light, minor, Rebecca Light Black, Humphrey Light, and Patience Light Hance.
By the time the estate was settled, Samuel's widow had married Riley Vaughn, and in documents is called Tempe Mahala Vaughn. Also, Rebecca Light was married to Mr. Denton at her father's death, but by the time the estate was settled, she was married to Henry Black, so she is referred to by both names.
I will be glad to email a file of my transcription of the probate documents to anyone who is interested.I have not been able to find any other mention of Tempe Mahala Light and would be very interested in anyone who has information about her and about the parents of Samuel Light.
