I have obtained a copy of the probate package, c 1814, of John Lity/Lite/Light of Knox County, Indiana, found in Box 4, File No. 1814, at The Lewis Library at Vincennes University, Vincennes, Knox County, Indiana.John Lity/Lite died without a will sometime between November, 1813 and May, 1814.Based on the information contained in the papers, I find nothing that would indicate that he is the father of the brothers, Russel (1803-1864) and Blewford (1807-1846) Light. The papers mention a widow, Elizabeth Lity/Lite, but no children.
I believe there is a link between John Lity/Lite/Light of Knox County, Indiana, and the brothers, Blewford and Russel Light, based on the people I find listed throughout John's probate papers as well as the fact that they were all in Knox County together but I have found no proof of any relationship.
The estate was administered by William Bruce as well as his widow, Elizabeth.William Bruce was the father of Spier Spencer Bruce who was the second husband of Blewford Light's widow, Catharine (Richard) Light.Daniel Justice was a companion to John Light as evidenced by statements in the file.Daniel Justice also purchased items at John's estate auction.Daniel Justice married Mary Lite on the 28th of February, 1811, in Knox Co., Indiana.Although I do not know who Mary's parents were she is possibly John's sister.
The only other Lity/Lite mentioned in John Lity/Lite/Light's probate papers other than his widow, Elizabeth, is Daniel Lity/Lite.Daniel Lity/Lite purchased items at John's estate sale.Interestingly, Daniel Lity/Lite died shortly after John Lity/Lite/Light.His probate package, December 1814, can also be found in Box 4, File No. 1814, at The Lewis Library at Vincennes University, Vincennes, Knox County, Indiana. The items Daniel Lity/Lite purchased at John Lity/Lite/Light's estate auction are listed in Daniel Lity/Lite's estate. The same people are listed throughout the estate documents.William Bruce was the administrator for Daniel's estate and Elizabeth Lite and Daniel Justice purchased items from Daniel's estate.Based on the small size of Daniel's estate and the fact that no mention is made of a widow of Daniel Lity/Lite, I would hazard a guess that Daniel Lity/Lite was a young man at the time of his death.
While in Knox County, Indiana, I searched other records and found only one John Lity/Lite/Light.In 1802, 1804, and 1807, John Light voted in the "election of general convention of the territory Knox Co., Indiana".In 1807, John Light is listed in the Knox County Territorial Census with a family of five. There is only one John Light listed in the 1812 Militia Census of Indiana in Knox County. All of this leads me to believe that all of the aftorementioned John Lights are the same John Lity/Lite/Light who's probate package I have mentioned.
One other item of interest I would like to mention is the fact that there is a Russel Light enumerated on the 1810 Knox County, Indiana, Federal Census. This would indicate that there was a Russel Light in Knox County prior to the birth of Russel Light, brother of Blewford Light!I find no other records for this elder Russel Light other than the 1810 Federal Census.
