Hello, Angela Lightsey. I am one of the bunch descended from the brothers who came to South Ga.{Echols Co.] from SC. They go back to George [or Georg] who landed in Charlston with his father J.J. Leitzeit, Leitseit, or whatever. I do know I have heard my father [b.about 1907]tell a family history of an earlyGrandF. L. who was "Dutch" and spoke broken English [and had shoulder length hair].
Because of the oddity of the name, the repeated use of the first names [Samuel, Walter, many many Marys, etc. there is not much doubt of the linage.[I am just as glad they dropped Johannes]
My Lightsey line was Samuel[me],Walter,
Samuel,Dave,Samuel,John,and George Jacob.
I am just beginning to try to fit some of the puzzles togather and would really like to hear more from you. We do have a very rich variety in family. From a world reknown jazz musician to a rocket scientist [plus some better know horse thieves]
My father and G.father were Turpentiners in South Ga.and North Fla. Before them, I do not know, probably farmers.
I had never given any thought of having African American relatives until that moment in Ft. Jackson, then it dawned on me that of course I did. Now with the reach of the internet we can put some of the pieces togeather. I am going to do some searching and will let you know when I find something.
