OK - some history. My father is David Lillis, born in Dublin in 1930. he was leader of the Irish Symphony Orchestra for several years and leader of the Irish String Quartet. My mother was the cellist in that quartet. My mother, Coral, was born in NZ of Australian parents (Bendigo), but came back to NZ in 1979. She is a lecturer at Auckland University's music department.
Interestingly, although Lillis is an Irish version of the English name 'Lawless', the original Lillis in our branch of the clan was my Irish grandfather's father, an Englishman - a Sargeant Major in the British forces occupying Dublin between about 1890 and 1912. My Irish grandfather (Ernest Lillis, born either 1899 or 1900; died in 1972) was a lovely, kind-hearted man who I remember very fondly. He spoke several times of his difficult childhood with an alcoholic mother who embarrassed her husband by turning up to regiment parades blind drunk and disorderly. Her husband left her to go back to England with his unit around 1912 and my grandfather had to go out and work for a living at the age of 12 (in a bicycle repair shop).
As for me - I have two brothers. My twin is Anton who lives about 100 km north of London (near Chatham), married to Tracey, with two boys. My younger brother Steven is also married (to Rachel Cassie), also with two boys. He lives in Hamilton, New Zealand.
