Hi Jack, I am hoping that you and some of your fellow Linthicums can help me with my research on my Sanders/Saunders and Chambers families. I have, in the past few months, traced the family of my 3great-grandmother Rachel Chambers, who was born in 1767 in Md and died in 1857 in Emanuel Co Ga, back to her great-grandparents, who were Samuel Chambers and Anne Sanders Gassaway of Anne Arundel Co Md. I have noticed that the family has some sort of connection to the Linthicum family.
Samuel Chambers was born about 1668/1670 in Anne Arundel Co Md, and died there 11 Apr 1728. He married Anne Sanders Gassaway, widow of Capt. Nicholas Gassaway, in 1700 in Anne Arundel Md. Anne was a daughter of James Sanders/Saunders and his wife Rebecca, who lived in Anne Arundel Co Md.I have noticed that one of the witnesses to Thomas Linthicum's will in 1701 was a James Saunders, and another was a Rebecca Saunders. It has occurred to me that this may have been my James and Rebecca Sanders.
There is a deed dated 31 Jul 1718 n Anne Arundel Co in which Hezekiah and wife Milcah Linthicum deeded, for 5 pounds, to Samuel Chambers, AA, part of Lot 33, 100 sq ft in London Town, where Samuel lately built a 40 ft house. (Md Genealogies, "Linthicum Fam."), says Milcah Francis (14 N 1666-Dec 1721, d/o Thomas & Ruth), m 5 Oct 1699, Hez. L.
Samuel deeded this land, in his will, to Wm Chapman, husband of his daughter Rebecca.
Why did Samuel Chambers already have a house built on this lot, which he bought from Hezekiah and Milcah?
I noticed one message on the Linthicum board asking about a Bateman marriage. I also have this strange will -
Bateman, William, AA Co, 23rd Jan 1706; 10 Mar 1706-07. To Church of All Hallows parish, personalty. To wife Sarah, extx, entire real estate and residue of personalty. Agnes, daughter of Samuell and Anne Chambers, of AA Co, and her heirs, all real estate at decease of wife, and in event of her decease without issue, to pass to parish afsd as glebe land. Test: Robert Neall, Mary Williams. 12.84
Not only do I not know how these people might be related, but Agnes had at least one brother and one sister also living in 1706, and she would have been a very small child. Was she their goddaughter?
You might also find of interest, Samuel and Anne had a son Robert whose daughter Agnes married Thomas Baldwin, daughter of John Baldwin and Hester Larkin. I noticed that you have Nancy Baldwin Cotton as the wife of Thomas Linthicum.
I am not sure where James Sanders or Samuel Chambers were from before Anne Arundel Co, but they both lived in London Town on the South River and were members of All Hallows Church. James Sanders was also a member of the Council of Maryland while it was under the royal government. The Sanders family seemed to have interest in shipping. Also, Anne Sanders' first husband was a sea captain, as was a son-in-law of Samuel and Anne.Samuel Chambers was JP of AA Co, also a tobacco planter. My ancestor, his son Nicholas, moved to Cecil Co Md. There were a number of Welch names in my ancestry from Nicholas - his wife was Mary John, and his son Jonas, my ancestor, married Priscilla Jones.
I am hoping someone can help me with further information on the Sanders and/or Chambers families of early Anne Arundel Co, and how they might be connected to the Linthicum family.
