This is my third attempt to reply to your message.I’ve been having trouble with my broadband connection.
I’m currently drafting a thesis on ‘Lock(e)s in and westerly of Norwich, Norfolk during 16th to mid 19th century’.My initial aim was to try and enhance my own family tree with direct Lock(e) ancestors, which has so far only been partially successful. However, as a by-product, I’ve so far identified about 350 male Lock(e)s in the area concerned, but mainly not my direct ancestors which, when I publish my first version, the information may be useful to other researchers like yourself.
I’d identified your ancestors Jonathan Lock b1768 and his two sons John Lock b1791 and Robert Lock b1800, all in Larling.Jonathan Locke born 25/12/1768 married 6/3/1791 in Attleborough (or married 7/3/1791 in Larling, possibly at St Ethelbert), Norfolk to Sarah Ellmer.
Jonathan Locke b1768 apparently to John Lock and Mary (both assumed born c1740), but no Ancestry public tree records found and no likely marriage record to Mary found.Apparently, John and Mary’s other children were Henry Lock b1764 and Elizabeth Lock b1772.
But what subsequently happened to Sarah Ellmer, did she die before 1821?An LDS record shows Sarah Elmore (or Ellmer?) born c1773 in Eastmore, Barton Bendish (between Downham Market and Swaffham), Norfolk died 24/8/1808, so she could have married Jonothan Locke b1768 and had children before she died.Apparently, Jonothan Locke and Sarah Ellmer had two sons, John Lock b1791 in England (believed in Larling) and Robert Lock b1800 in Larling, Norfolk and was convict-transported in 1821 and died 19/10/1835 in Liverpool, NSW, Australia (sourced from an Australian convict transportation register).
An LDS record shows John Lock b1791 married 3/6/1816 in Larling to Sarah Duffield. He was convict-transported to Australia in 1826 where he apparently re-married 30/11/1835 in Maitland, NSW to Ann Elliott, had 13 children and d1880 in Queensland aged 89.But what happened to Sarah Duffield?Another LDS record shows John Locke b1784 (or b1791?) in Larling married 1836 (or 1835?) in Maitland, NSW, Australia to Ann Elliott b1819 in England (was she convict-transported?) and he died 1/3/1880 and was buried 2/3/1880 in Warwick, Queensland (where they were early settlers).Ann Elliott apparently died 21/11/1898.The record only shows 2 of their 13 children. Also, based on the Beilby (owner: mbeilby_1) family tree on Ancestry, John Lock b1791 and Sarah Duffield had two children, Edward Lock b1817 and John Lock b1818.
Robert Lock b1800, son of Jonothan and Sarah, is believed married 26/1/1824 in St Johns Church Parramatta NSW, Australia to Maria, apparently the daughter of the Richmond Chief called Yarramundi. It seems it was the first marriage of an Aboriginal woman to white man.Robert died in Blacktown Road, Blacktown, NSW, Australia and was buried in St Bartholomews Church Prospect.
A Vicki Mclennan archive on Rootsweb at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/aus-convicts/2001-03/0984316396http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/aus-convicts/2001-03/0984316396 shows John Loch b1791 shows John Lock b1791 went out on the convict ship Sesostris, but Jonathon Lock aged 56 went out on the Grenada in 1821 with his son Robert Lock aged 21.Both were tried in Norfolk for stealing a goose and a pig, where John Lock stole a horse and was originally sentenced to death but tendered a letter to the judge stating that “England was no good for him and he be sent to the NSW colony”.
I also identified another Lock in Larling.James Lock assumed born c1791 m1812 in Larling (SW of Attleborough) to Elizabeth Edwards. They appeared (both aged 50) in the 1841 Holme Hale (NW of Attleborough) census return (see http://www.genealogy.doun.org/transcriptions/documents.php?district_id=20&document_id=17057http://www.genealogy.doun.org/transcriptions/documents.php?district_id=20&document_id=17057) with their children James Lock b1822 (aged 20), John Lock b1828 (or c1826?, aged 15) and Richard Lock born c1840 (aged 1)
I hope the above may be of some help.I have a photo which may be Jonathan Lock.Perhaps you may have information and photos to share about other Lock(e)s in the Norfolk area concerned, if so, we could exchange email addresses.
