Nancy, do you need to update your email address? My reply didn't go through, so here for all to read is my reply.Send me your address if you can.
Hi, Nancy.I think we may have corresponded before a long time ago.I also am a ggggg granddaughter of Col. Francis and Gen Matthew.Which child of Francis do you descend from?Could it be John?
I have a transcript of Francis' will but not a copy.If you have a copy I would love it if you could scan it and send it this way. Also the picture of the plaque.Oh, that would be wonderful.
Have you seen the website Locke's Dismounted Militia? Its a group that does reenactments and our Col. Locke is the one it is based on.You can google to get there.I was looking at it again today. Its very interesting.
Like most descendants of the two brothers, I proved Gen Matthew for my membership in DAR.Then I began to think poor Francis was just as important. And as Effiegene Locke Wingo said, "Too much has been made of Matthew.Francis was the one who was actually on the battlefield and certainly a hero in the Battle of Ramsours Mill."So I decided to also prove Francis, for a supplemental membership.
To my surprise, when checking on Francis, I found no one had successfully proved him as a Revolutionary War ancestor. They DID prove his service, but an early member had said she descended from a daughter whose name was not correct as a child of Francis. It looked like about six more members of the family used the same wrong name.So DAR put a stop on the line until someone could prove descendancy from a correct child. No one did it!So it became a family obligation for me to do that.
Now it is done, and Francis has a correct descendancy through his son John to us. Part of the problem in proving Francis was the three Francis's who were living at the same time.Straightening out the direct descendancy from two men instead of one was also tricky.Effiegene's journals showed which Francis was which and how Matthew's daughter married Francis' son.
When everyone was entered in the computer years ago, I had a nice printout from Matthew but decided to go back one more generation to get his parents on the chart, too. When I told the computer to do that, it came back with a double line of descendancy which really threw me.Since most of the generations were the same names on both lines, I just knew the computer had made a mistake. But after much scrutiny I discovered the John & Margaret marriage and how that affected the line.VERY interesting.
You may already be in DAR, but I would be happy to give you any information you need if you, too, want to prove descent from Francis.Just let me know. Your email address of "redclay" makes me think you may live not far from me.I am in Tulsa, OK.Are you in Oklahoma or Texas? Let's stay in touch.
