Congratulation for your thirst for knowledge. I yearn to trace my family lineage likewise. From my research my Great Grandfather Joseph Lomax(b.@1839), and Great Grandmother, Phoebe Lomax(b.@1849) originated in NC, maybe VA.
This may help you. I received this from Dr.Michael Lomax, president of the NAACP.
"I am always delighted to hear from a Lomax engaged in genealogy. Over the years, I've heard from several with family roots in VA. I have done a fair amount of genealogy but not on the Lomax branch, but here's what I know.
My paternal grandfather was Lucius Walter Lomax, born in Brenham, TX in late 1870s. His father and mother were both from there as well. I don't know how they got there or anything about their parents.
My youngest brother, Lucius Walter Lomax IV, has writteen several articles for TX publications about my grandfather and great grandfather. They were both colorful figures, and if you Google the name you should be able to get to the articles. One appeared in Texas Monthly in late '70s or early '80s.
My other brother Mark and sister Mia, both of whom live in CA, also do genealogy and may wish to respond to your inquiry. I am sending them your email.
"Finally, there is some family connection to the late writer Louis Lomax who was from Valdosta, GA. I have never been clear how he was related to us. I assume that, as with your family, ours started in VA and migrated South and West prior to the Civil War. Don't know if the shared last name reflects common ancestry or common slave owner or both."
Beverly, my branch of the Lomax family ended up in Mississippi. Relatives said she was sold and sent to the Deep South and brought several of her sons. I am still trying to confirm that. I you have any documentation or leads on a Phoebe/Phebe or Robert Lomax please share with me. I would love to get my hand on some old plantation owners docs that would close the loop. I purchased a DNA kit from National Geographic that will narrow it down were the male side of the family came from but will have to figure out a way to get my great grandmother side. Beverly, keep in touch. I am stationed at Fort Hood TX and may be able to get you some info since I am in Texas.
