My mother was Elizabeth TANT, descended from John Taint/Tant and Henryetta who first appear in the Scottish records in 1822 at Evanton.
There is a second line of TANT in Scotland, John Tant married to Hannah Aldred, first appearance is 1830 in Cromarty.
And a third line, William Tant married to Katharine Yellowless, first appearance in 1834 in Evanton.
"My" Jogn Tant was Butler to Alexander Fraser of Inchcoulter and Balcony, an estate immediately to the east of Evanton, until 1826 when John and Henryetta moved to the Phoenix Inn at the south end of Evanton.
In 1829, the couple moved over the firth to Cromarty, where the last trace of them is a Debt Summons in 1835, although there four children are easily traced.
The other John and Hannah married in London in 1820, then appear in Cromarty in 1830. This John was a Vintner, so occupationally close to "My" John being a Butler and Innkeeper.
"My" John and Henryetta do not show up anywhere in the 1841 UK Census; and at present I have no other information about them after the 1835 Debt Proceedings.
However, three of their children show up in the 1841 Census, living in Edinburgh with the other John Tant and Hannah. Their oldest child Evan Baillie Fraser Tant is in service with the Sinclair family also in Edinburgh.
William Tant married Katharine, apparently local to Evanton, in February 1834 when he also was Butler to the same Alexander Fraser.
In November 1834, William applied to join the Excise Service, the Entry Papers state that he was born in "Pancras, County of Middlesex", around 1808. His Guarantors were the same Alexander Fraser and Doctor James Wishart of Dingwall. WT later served in Whitby and other parts of Scotland, his last Excise post being on Jura.
Doctor Wishart's brother Alexander owned a city block in Glasgow.
Alexander Fraser founded Evanton about 1820, naming it after his son, Evan Baillie Fraser. AF was a prosperous trader and plantation owner in the West Indies, where that son Evan was born. On returning to Scotland, he invested in the Inchcoulter and Balcony area. Balcony is readily identified today; but Inchcoulter is much less certain - it seems to be the area to the south of Evanton.
The name Evan Baillie Fraser Tant has passed down through the generations, either in full or as Evan, to the degree there was an EBFT living in Edinburgh recently.
"My" John and William particularly included employer's names in their families; and also the names Henryetta (+ Henry) and Hannah (Aldred) appear in those three family lines.
EBFT was both a Butler in most Censuses; and also a Farmer if his wife's and children's records are checked.
Two of those lines are also linked by a male Tant from each marrying PLUMMER sisters in Edinburgh. -----------------------------------
All this suggests but does NOT prove that those three TANT lines are likely to be (closely?) connected back down in Engalnd in the years before their respective migrations to Scotland.
Most of the present Edinburgh Tants are descended from William and Katharine and also an Australian line.
"My" John's and Henryetta's descendents are scattered, some in England, others in Canada.
Second John's and Hannah's descendents are down in Lancashire.
