Hi Kenneth, I am a Longtin descendent whose family moved to Michigan. I did some looking for you. From what I could find the Longtins in Bennington are descendents of Narcisse Longtin and Eliza. Here is the census. Perhaps you can tell if any of the children are siblings of your Peter. Peter or Pierre does not appear in VT for this census. As the couple married in 1872, they must have had children born 1873-77.
This seems to be the couple with Onesine probably Evaline in the later census. 1881 CENSUS: Camille ARCAND M Male French 34 Q Ouvrier Catholique Marie ARCAND M Female French 30 Q Catholique Narcisse LONGTIN M Male French 32 Q Ouvrier Catholique Elisa LONGTIN M Female French 29 Q Catholique Narcisse LONGTIN Male French 8 Q Catholique Pierre LONGTIN Male French 5 Q Catholique Alida LONGTIN Female French 3 Q Catholique Onesine LONGTIN Female French 2 Q Catholique Source Information: Census Place Iberville, Iberville, Quebec Family History Library Film 1375839 NA Film Number C-13203 District 64 Sub-district B Page Number 52 Household Number 270
It would seem that the couple was Narcisse Longtin and Elizabth Bousquet married 29 Jan 1872 St-Athanase-de-Bleury, Iberville.
Your Peter seems to have be in New York before moving to VT:
