You really got me to pick up my old history books again!!
Yes, Ansbach-Bayreuth was a territory here in Franconia (northern Bavaria) at that time ruled by a Landgraf ( count or earl). I found quite a few interesting web sites about the history during those years when German soldiers were fighting for the British in the revolutionary war in America. I guess you know enough about it though, since you probably have been doing research on Michael for a long time.
"Lorenz, Michael Anspach/Bayreuth; town unknown; Private; Bayreuth Reg., Co.1; Smith (Staedtler); Deserted 13 Aug 1778 at Newport, RI and joined the American forces; Straight-line genealogy established."
It still does not say where he was born, but that "organisation" might have more infos on him.
I also found out that 1/3 of all the troups came from Hessen and 2/3 from many different areas of Germany, and that they were called "Hessians" because of that, even if they were not all from there!
Coming from south you go up 2 inches (in the centre of the bottom line) and you will find : "Onspach"and "Payreut" in the east, close to the border to Boehmer Wald. The letter that looks more like an "f" is "s", and the spelling is of course the old way! I live close to "Hochstet", which is about 3 inches north of "Onspach"!!!
Here is the German telepone book so you can check the name Lorenz, Lorance and Lowrance! The pronounciation is the same with all three of them.
http://teleauskunft.dehttp://teleauskunft.declick "English" and then "Das Telefonbuch" and just add the name! 31404 x Lorenz!
Well, I could not help you very much, but I did learn a lot about our history!
