Hi,
I am interested in the Lorentz family in Waterloo County also as I beleive they are cousins of my ggg-grandfather, John Wernette who emigrated to the area in about 1835 from Sternenberg, Alsace, France.
I recently located an LDS document that indexes Alsatian emigrants between 1816 and 1866. It lists the emigration of one Joseph Lorentz, from Sternenberg, boarding a ship to New York in 1840.He was born in 1815.This appears to be a likely candidate for the Joseph and Mary listed in the 1881 census and the 1847 birth of their son, Anthony in Waterloo County - especially since my relative, John Wernette, was related to the Sternenberg Lorentz family by his mother, Anne Marie Lorentz Wernette, who was already living in Waterloo County.
I noted from the census records that there also appears to be another early Lorentz immigrant to Waterloo County.I beleive his name was Thiebaud Lorentz. The 1881 census only shows his widow, Catherine, born in 1810 living with her son, Thiebold, but this information suggests he may have been older and also may have emigrated earlier (perhaps with John Wernette about 1835).This hypothesis has not been confirmed, but I beleive there is a link between Joseph and the Sternenberg line of the Lorentz family.
I have information tracing this line of the Lorentz family back to Moosch, Alsace around 1600. By the way, the 't' in the family name seems to have been there for quite some time.
Please feel free to email me if you have additional information or need more on this line.
