Mary,
I also am working on the Lorings of Maine, to the extent that many were also descendants of Thomas and Susannah (UNKNOWN) Collier, who came to Hingham, Mass. in 1635. (Thomas Loring was also one of the first settlers in Hingham.)
Phillip Quincy Loring was of the Loring-Collier line, so I thought when I saw your message tonight I might be able to quickly find some solid information. That didn't happen, but I have found a few hints that might be worth pursuing. Firstly, I have found "Philipp Q." Loring, wife Maud P. and dau. Dorothy, age 4, in Portland in the 1900 census. Phillip was already in the insurance business. I do not find the family in the Maine censuses of 1910 or 1920, although they should be there. There may be some very garbled spelling in the indexes. Phillip is again in the 1930 census of Portland, listed as married, but his wife is not listed with him, nor Dorothy, who was presumably married by then.
I do not find a Mr. "Minus" in the area censuses of 1910 or 1920, but for 1930 I found a "Dorothy E. MANNIX" living in Portland. This was the wife of a Daniel N. (or "M."), a physician born about 1894 in Maine. Dorothy was age 34 in 1930, so b. about 1896 in Maine. They must have married about 1922- 23, as they had a dau., Margaret N., aged 6. This is the latest census that has been released, of course, but I did find some other listings for Daniel and Dorothy at
Per online Maine marriage records, on August 29, 1947 Dorothy "T." Mannix married John H. Simonds, both residents of Portland. Finally I checked for Dorothy Simonds in the Soc. Security death list, to find that a person of this name died in Portland on Sept. 3, 1979.Unfortunately for a neat and tidy ending to our detective saga, her date of birth is given not as May 6, 1896, but as February 4, 1896.
Despite these inconsistencies in dates and middle initials, I think this Dorothy MANNIX is likely to be the correct person. I hope that I have given you a possibility that you might work on further, anyway.
