WILLIAM BOOTH LOUGHRAN
I am trying to acquire any information available on a Belfast born American Civil War veteran that is buried in Australia. William Booth Loughran was the son of Edward Loughran, a draper, and his wife, Mary Jane, and he was born at Belfast, Ireland in 1847.At some later stage, prior to 1849, the family moved to Scotland, where two of William’s siblings, including his brother, Edward Booth Loughran, were born.Edward himself was later to take up journalism, as did William, and was a well known poet in Australia, in later years. The family resided in the city of Glasgow.William made his way to America, and enlisted as a substitute private, for one year’s service, in company K of the 7th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, at Morristown, New Jersey, on March 16, 1865.He passed away on Friday, September 1, 1918 in New South Wales, Australia.
Any information anyone can provide on his birth, family or life will be appreciated and if I can acquire e3nough information he will be placed on the Australian Memorial website, www.acwv.info.
Sincerely,
James Gray, [email protected]
