Dick, You are exactly right on the Abenaki homelands. They originally inhabited the land that is now Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire and southern Quebec, Canada.You are also right about the records to be found on the Abenaki -- they are virtually nonexistent.The French were much better than the English on keeping records of natives. Some of the best sources on the Abenaki are early French missionary and church records, as they converted many Abenaki to Catholicism and gave them Christian names. I know that the name of Mary's aunt was a long shot, but I'm willing to try anything at this point! I do have some hope though. Louis says that this Chief Big Toe traced his lineage for him. Therefore, there must have been some documents that he relied on to establish Louie's mom's indian heritage as Abenaki. That means that info. is still out there somewhere, and if it can be traced once it can be traced again. Talk to you soon, and keep digging!
