Recently I received a document which mentioned the above as a ancestor.Jeanette Tabb reminded me that we had seen that name before. So I searched my notes and found the family history of Everet Powell Lumpkin as prepared by his daughter by Doris (Lumpkin) Crank 17 May 1960.This was included in the publication "Texarkana Pioneer Family Histories Locale Miller County, Arkansas and Bowie County, TX compiled by Nancy Moores Watts Jennings, Secretary and copyiged 1961 by the Texarkana Pioneer Association.
After writing about her proven ancestry, Doris continued with speculations that Colonel Jacob Lumpkin was the first of record in the Colonies and the next record was the grandchildren of Jacob being George, Joseph and Anthony Lumpkin. She then wrote about the family of Mary Cody and George LUmpkin whose eldest son was John Lumpkin who married to Lucy Hopson. She then wrote that John and Mary [sic] Hopson had eleven childen the eldest being William. By Bible records and other records, we know that John and Lucy had eleven children and that the eldest son was Wiliam born 14 August 1780 in Pittsylvania Co. VA died 17 December 1840 at the plantation "Athenia" Marshall Co. Mississippi.
Then Doris wrote: "William settled on the James river where he married and became the parents of a family of four sons Joseph, Thomas and Squirrellskin, who became the progrenitors of all the Lumpkins in this sarea and mentioned in this file.
Joseph and Squireelskin moved to Georgia where they married and reared families whose descendants have held the highest officews in the land the gift of the people of that State - one becoming Governor, and another Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, both well remembered throughout the land..."
We know this cannot be William, son of Lucy Hopson and John Lumpkin, son of Mary Cody and George Lumpkin because John Lumpkin moved to Georgia when their William was only four years old.
Has any other researcher ever run across a Squirrelskin Lumpkin?I can't believe that Doris Crank made this up because she was a very intelligent woman as she had a Master's Degree in Secondary Education and was working on her Master's in 1960.
