Carol, I was hoping you might have more on G. W. and his father. Here is what I know about the G.W in your letter.
My Martin family met the Lumpkin family in KY or maybe earlier. Through the marriage of G.W to Mary Martin, the Martin family followed the Lumpkin family to Arkansas. I am trying to establish exactly where in Ballard or McCracken County, KY they lived to be able to search records in those counties for clues on my Martin family.
The George Washington Lumpkin b. 1817 whom you have the original letter(which is terrific) listed his wife Mary and children Gabriella, Julia and Louisa. His father mentioned in the letter was Robert Lumpkin b. 1793 a son of Robert Lumpkin and Elizabeth Forrest. George Washington Lumpkin's b. 1817 mother was Edy Bookout.
G. W. will's probated in White County, AR in 1859 has my third generation grandfather James Martin as co-executor with Hayden Edwards. G.W.'s wife Mary was James' sister. Hayden Edwards was G.W.'s brother-in-law by his sister Mary. I have a poor copy of the will. I hope to get a clearer copy from the Arkansas History Commission.
Mary Martin Lumpkin and the child Lousia mentioned in your letter must have died because they are not mentioned in the will and the will was establishing guardianship of Julia and Gabriella. Julia and Gabriella went to live with the Edwards family and are in the household of Hayden Edwards' son Benolli in the 1860 White County, Ar census.
Gabriella married William DeBerry Overstreet. I do not know what happened to Julia.
My grandfather was told a tale on "Wash" Lumpkin passed from his father about "Wash" and James Martin trapping a black bear in the hollow trunk of a fallen tree with a honey hive.I have it recorded on tape. It's pretty good.
If you do run across someething about the Lumpkins' while they are in KY, I would love to know about it.
