This message was sent to the Joseph Habersham Chapter, DAR, (Atlanta GA) And published in their 1902 Historical Collection. I have copied it exactly as published.
" 160. LUMPKIN - I am anxious to gain what information I can of this family, to which my grandmother belonged. There were three sisters, one's name was Martha, one Nancy, the other Mary, who married, first, Mr. McNott and afterwards Rev. Joshua Hey, a Baptist minister. The other two, Martha, my grandmother, and Nancy, my aunt, married two brothers, John and Edward Gresham. They, after their marriage, lived on their plantation, which was near Social Circle. They were slave owners. My mother married General Geo. W. Evans. This little information, I thought, might aid you as to the information you want. M.M. "
I believe the 3 three Lumpkins sisters are the daughters of Philip Lumpkin b. 1762 King & Queen Co. VA Philip married Sarah Byne, a daughter of Rev. Edmund Byne. At some time they moved to Burke Co . GA
Sister #1:Mary Lumpkin m. #1 William McNatt and #2 Rev. Joshua Key. The correct husband surnames differ from the above quote.
Sister #2:Nancy Lumpkin m. Edmund Byne Gresham, also named as Edward B. Gresham in some records.
Sister #3: Martha Lumpkin m. John Gresham, Jr. Martha is the grandmother of “M. M” who wrote the message to the Habersham Chapter, DAR
The Problem: I am unable to identify Gresham “brothers” My notes, so far, do not show the Gresham husbands as being “brothers”.
My research says that Edmund Byne Gresham, who m. Nancy, was the s/o Job Gresham b. in 1754 and John Gresham, Jr. who m. Martha, was the s/o of John Gresham, Sr. Could someone please make the corrections and help me identify the Gresham “brothers”
My relationship to this family is through Geo W. Evans named at the end of the message. George W. Evans m. Mary Ann Gresham, d/o of Martha Lumpkin and John Gresham, Jr. “M. M.” was their daughter.
Your help is requested as I try to locate Evans ancestors. Patricia Evans LaMarche
