Note:While not proven, it is almost a certainty that John Lunsford, who was also from North Carolina, and lived in his later years in the home of James Lunsford in Clay County, Kentucky, was the father of Lemuel Lunsford. He was born in the early 1750's, and his wife's name is unknown.

Abraham Kilby Lunsford was born in 1818, in the part of Surrey County North Carolina, that later became Wilkes County. He married Minerva Gray, born August 31, 1822, daughter of Thomas Henry Gray and Mary Ann (Polly) Frazier, on November 8, 1843, in Greene County, Tennessee. He left Kentucky in 1861, and enlisted in the Union Army on November 9, 1862.He died at the Post Hospital, Jefferson Barracks Missouri, in November of 1864.Minerva died at their home in Grundy County, Missouri, near the vanished town of Mitchell, south of Trenton, Missouri. All their children were born in London, Laurel County, Kentucky.Abraham was strongly anti-slavery, and may have been influenced by his association with the Gray and Frazier families, both of whom had long histories in the Quaker church. The area of Greene County, Tennessee where the Gray family lived was called "Quaker Knob," and Ezekiel Frazier, Mary Ann's grandfather was a Quaker minister who helped found the Society of Friends in Greene County before moving to Ohio.

Most of these Lunsford children moved, after Minerva died, in 1875, to Kansas and Oklahoma. Most settled in the area of Claremore, Oklahoma, and their descendants are still numerous in that area.Abner Baker Gray settled in Ness County Kansas, and died August 2, 1947, on the same day his sister Alabama died, on her great-grandson, Ronald Couch’s ninth birthday.
Alabama Lunsford was born January 11, 1858, in London, Laurel County, Kentucky. She moved with her family, in1860, to Grundy County, Missouri, near Trenton. She married Marion Azariah Couch, son of William Couch and Louisa Jane Provance, on October 2, 1874, in Jasper, Jasper County, Missouri. She died on August 2, 1947.Both Alabama and Marion are buried in the Peace Cemetery, just north of Joplin, Missouri.Alabama lived across the street from her son, Wid, and, after he died, she was the "babysitter" for her daughter-in-law, Martha Couch's younger sons. She told them often about her "papa", Abraham Lunsford, and his violent disagreements with her grandpa Lemuel over slavery and the rights of Kentuckians to decide the issue without northern interference. She recounted that her mother, Minerva, told that their last visit to Lemuel's home was the occasion for a particularly heated disagreement between Lemuel, Abraham, and two of Abraham's brothers who agreed with their father's stance on state rights. Not long after, Abraham took his family north and enlisted in the Union army. She said that her mother's Bible had a list of all of Lemuel's children, and that one of the other girls (She thought it was Mary?) took the Bible to Oklahama, after Minnie Lunsford died. The only "uncle" that anyone recalls that Allie mentioned was "Isaac".More is written about Alabama (Allie) in the COUCH surname pages.
