A James Lutley was baptised in Hemyock, Devon, 13th January 1722. His parents were James and Mary Lutley. On 5th January 1724 a John was baptized to the same parents.
A John Lutley married Mary Thomas on the 3rd August 1751 and they had three children. (This is possibly the same John as above). Son- Thomas baptized bapt 20th May 1753. Daughter- Sarah, bapt 1st February 1756 Son- James bapt. 1st April 1759. Mary Lutley nee Thomas was buried 9th march 1760.
John then remarried, to Alice Franks at Hemyock 13th June 1763. They had six children- Robert bapt 23rd June 1765 (buried 6th October 1765). John bapt. 3rd November 1768. (A John married Betty Hutchins 27th April 1797). Mary bapt, 3rd November 1768 (buried 26th March 1769). Edward 26th July 1772 (no mother’s name recorded). William, bapt. 5th October 1775. Robert, bapt (posthumously), on 21st February 1779.
A William Lutley, aged 11 years, was apprenticed in Husbandry under the provisions of the Poor law to William Farrant of Clayhidon in 1786. Edward Lutley (his brother?) had been apprenticed to the same man in 1783. After serving his time William Luttley joined the Somerset Fencible Cavalry somewhere on the Somerset and Devon border (probably in Wellington), in 1794. The regiment was one of the many yeomanry militia formed around this time as a counter to the threat of invasion by the French Revolutionary Armies.
William Luttley =Ann Hicks Married at St Mary’s church Scarborough 28 March 1797. William and Ann married by special licence. His occupation is given as a soldier in the Somerset Fencible Cavalry (which was stationed in the town at the time). Daughter- Mary bapt S/bro 7 Oct 1800. Son- John bapt S/bro 21 Jan 1804. Son- William bapt St Michael’s, Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland, 22 Feb 1814. Address Southwick Boathouse. Father’s occupation recorded as a carpenter. (This William married Elizabeth Henry 23 Oct 1837 at St Andrew’s Dalton-Le- Dale. Their name on the marriage records is Rutledge and they and their family are thereafter listed in all Seaham church and civil records as Rutley. They lived in Seaham Harbour where Elizabeth’s family were pilots. She died in1870, he not long afterwards. Some of their descendants moved to Blyth in Northumberland where they worked as fishermen). Daughter- Sarah Bapt St Michael’s 29 Nov 1815. Address Southwick Boathouse. Sarah never married. Died in the workhouse Sunderland 1890. Son- Thomas born 9 March 1818. Bapt St Michael’s 6 Dec 1826. Address Southwick Lodge. Thomas married Sarah Bellaby 1843. He died 1885. Daughter- Elizabeth born 10 Feb 1820. Bapt St Michael’s 6 Dec 1826. Address Southwick Lodge. Elizabeth (Ruttley) married Mathew Cook at St Peter’s Monkwearmouth 1845.
William bapt 1775, died Feb 1837, at Farringdon Row Deptford.His age given in the register is 66. Ann Luttley nee Hicks died 1842 at Deptford, Sunderland.
John Luttley bapt Scarborough 1804 married Isabella Holmes 11 May 1828. Daughter- Alice Holmes Luttley bapt 9 April 1829. She married Francis Wright in 1851. Daughter- Ann bapt 1830. She married David Tate in 1850. Daughter- Isabel born 2 Oct 1838- died 11 Oct 1838. Son- William born 13 Jan 1840, bapt 25 Jan 1840. (William married Louisa Lee, a Gypsy, at St Andrew’s Newcastle in 1859. After his marriage to Louisa, William gave up his trade as a shipwright and lived as a Gypsy, travelling the country and earning his living as a basket maker and hawker). Son- Thomas Holmes Luttley born 25 Aug 1833. Married Jane Holroyd 25 Dec 1854. Son- John bapt 28 march 1836. John Married Elizabeth Holroyd (Jane’s sister) 22 June 1856. John died in a fall into a dry dock and there is an account of this accident in the Sunderland Echo Nov 1872.
John bapt Scarborough in 1804, was married and widowed three times. First to Isabella Holmes in 1828. She died in 1842. Then to Martha Wilkinson who he married in Hartlepool and then moved back to Scarborough where a daughter was born in Dog and Duck Lane in 1844. The infant lived only a few days. Finally John married Elizabeth Kearney in 1863. She died in 1868. John died in the Sunderland workhouse in 1875.

Thomas Holmes Lutley died of small pox in 1871.
John Ruttley born 1861 married Isabella Proctor. His birth cert records his name as Luttley, his marriage cert has Rutledge and his death cert states Ruttley. Son- Thomas born 21 Sept 1881. Son- John born 12 July 1883. My grandfather. He Married Elizabeth Jane Yule in 1900. Son- Thomas born Oct 1885. (Nicknamed ‘Tot’. Was a bookmaker, moved to South Bank in Middlesbrough in the 1920s. There is still a large family in Middlesbrough but they are now all called Rutledge). Son- James Henry Ruttley born 14 March 1889. Married Isabella Cramer. Lived in Hendon, Sunderland.
John born 1861 died at Monkwearmouth in 1896.
